Kelsea Ballerini Drops Shawn Mendes Cover, ‘Lost in Japan’ [LISTEN]
Kelsea Ballerini has shared her own dreamy cover of Shawn Mendes' pop hit "Lost in Japan." Readers can press play below to hear a clip of the tune, which Ballerini recorded for Spotify.
The "Miss Me More" artist lends her ethereal voice to Mendes' romantic lyrics, giving the song a breathy, jazz-infused vibe. "Do you got plans tonight? / I was hoping I could get lost in your paradise / The only thing I'm thinking 'bout is you and I / 'Cause I-I-I can't get you off my mind," Ballerini sings in the song's lyrics.
Mendes wrote "Lost in Japan" for his eponymous sophomore album in 2018. The fan favorite was remixed later that year by Zedd, and the remixed version was subsequently made into a Hollywood-inspired music video. Mendes says the song was inspired by all of the Justin Timberlake music he was listening to at the time.
“I had this dream that I was lost in this country and I woke up the next day," Mendes tells Billboard, "and we had this cool piano part and the song was birthed.”
Ballerini earned a 2019 Grammy Awards nomination for her sophomore album, Unapologetically, which she released in 2017. Additionally, Ballerini is currently taking a turn as an opener for superstar Kelly Clarkson on the Meaning of Life Tour alongside Season 14 The Voice winner Brynn Cartelli. Next, Ballerini will hit the road for her Miss Me More Tour in April, which takes its title from her recent single of the same name.
