Sara and Sean Watkins to Release ‘Watkins Family Hour’ Album

Nickel Creek siblings Sara and Sean Watkins are set to release a "Watkins Family Hour" album this summer.

The self-titled album is set for release via Family Hour Records and Thirty Tigers on July 24, with guest appearances from Fiona Apple and Benmont Tench, who is the keyboardist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The record is made up entirely of covers, featuring Sara Watkins' version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Steal Your Heart Away” -- which you can hear a preview of below -- and Sean Watkins' take on “Not in Nottingham,” from the 1973 Disney film Robin Hood. The pair started the "Watkins Family Hour" live show in 2002 at Largo in Los Angeles, Calif. The monthly event has featured guests from the music, comedy and entertainment worlds, including Jackson Browne, John C. Reilly, Nick Kroll and others. They will tour to support the album's release, with different performers joining them at each stop.

“We are being thoughtful about where we are going so we can have that sort of flexibility," Sara Watkins says. "It will be a very different show in every town.”

Sean Watkins and Apple recently worked together to release a version of the bluegrass murder ballad, “Banks of the Ohio.” Sara Watkins is also releasing a 7" vinyl project, due out May 8, with Sarah Jarosz and Aofie O’Donovan.
