Lady Antebellum, Band Perry on Obama Campaign ‘Wish List’
With the 2012 Presidential election in full swing, the current Commander in Chief has his eye on a group of influential celebrities to help him return for a second term -- including a couple of country music's hottest acts. But that doesn't mean they're participating in the campaign just yet.
Lady Antebellum and the Band Perry are two of 194 names on a list titled 'Confirmed and Passed Surrogates,' which includes musicians, athletes, political officials and actors approved by Obama campaign officials to help him in his bid for re-election. But both country bands say they have no plans of aligning with any political campaign.
"The members of Lady Antebellum did not submit their name for inclusion on the surrogate list for Obama's campaign," Lady Antebellum's publicist says in a statement (quote via USA Today). "Your request for confirmation comes as a surprise to me because the band has never commented on their political affiliations nor do they plan to in the future."
"This was a wish list of people and groups who may be asked to participate in a campaign event," Addie Whisenant, a spokeswoman for the Obama campaign, says. "Not everyone on this list has been contacted or agreed to help the campaign. We've already received robust support and participation from surrogates across the country, and that will only ramp up in 2012."
Other names on the list include Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, George Clooney, Whoopi Goldberg, Jessica Alba and Anne Hathaway.
Both Lady Antebellum and the Band Perry would have limited time to join any political campaigns in 2012 anyway. Lady A kick off the 2012 leg of their Own the Night tour tonight (Jan. 13) in Tulsa, Okla., while the Band Perry will juggle both their own headlining trek, Purveyors of Performance, as well as serve as an opening act on Brad Paisley's Virtual Reality World Tour 2012.
