Eric Church Albums Prove Source of Frustration: ‘I Don’t Like Making Records,’ Singer Says

Once an artist hits the third single from an album, it's fairly common in Nashville that they start thinking about their next project. This is most definitely not the case for Eric Church, whose gold-certified third album, Chief, has garnered the Top 15 song, "Homeboy," his first No. 1 hit, "Drink in My Hand," and the current Top 5 tune, "Springsteen."

"I don't like making records," Eric tells Taste of Country. "It's so hard for me, and it's hard on me because of what I go through as a songwriter and what I go through in the recording process. Every time it almost kills me. I never look forward to making a record."

That means fans won't be getting new music as soon as they may have hoped. "As successful as Chief has been, the great thing about it is we've got a long ways to go on Chief still because the record is selling," Eric explains. "Luckily, it will be a year from now before I even have to start thinking about where in the hell we go from here."

On the flip side, the singer-songwriter purposefully designed Chief to produce more than the standard three or four singles. Therefore, it's much more likely that you'll hear your favorite album cut on the radio.

"We're going to go deep on this record," he reveals. "It's a record made for that ... It's the best record we've made. Looking back, it will be one of those defined records for us and for our careers. I'm going to go as deep as we can go, and really that's up to me. The great thing about the label is, with the success of it selling they're going to leave it up to me. When I come to them and say, 'Hey, I've got the next thing,' we'll move on, but it's going to be a while."

Eric is certainly filling his time wisely. He's currently on the road, playing various summer fairs and festivals, in addition to recently announcing the fall leg of his Blood, Sweat & Beers tour with Justin Moore and Kip Moore. Get more information on Eric Church tour dates here.
