Carrie Underwood: Remixes Not in Her Repertoire
Carrie Underwood's latest album, Blown Away, landed at the top of both the country and the pop charts. The songstress, whose several crossover hits, including "Before He Cheats" and "Good Girl," earned her millions of fans from both genres, says she hopes to always make music that pushes boundaries.
"I grew up listening to everything; I have such a love for music," she tells the Chicago Tribune. "But I don't want to make the same album over and over again. I love that I can sing a song like 'Blown Away' and then turn around and sing a song like 'Cupid's Got a Shotgun.' One has this amazing country story line with the music that fits the song. I'm not gonna try to make it something that it's not. I'm not gonna think, 'I need to 'countrify' this by adding more fiddles and steel guitar.' We do creatively what the song wants. And 'Cupid's Got a Shotgun' -- you couldn't get more country than that."
The Oklahoma native finds it easier not to worry about whether her song fits a specific genre. "When a song like 'Before He Cheats,' 'Blown Away' or 'Cowboy Casanova' manages to have some crossover success, it does it 'as is.' I've never been one for doing remixes. Then I've gotta decide which version am I gonna be tonight: country Carrie or pop Carrie? I'd rather just make country music that anybody can get into no matter what they listen to ... I've had so many people come up to me and say, 'I didn't listen to country music, and now I do.'
Carrie hopes to bring non-country fans over to the genre through her music, opening their eyes and their ears to the diversity that the format now embraces. "I love the fact that you have your standard country artists on the radio," she continues, "and you have people like Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts, or Keith Urban or me, where we all occupy the same space and you're not turning on the radio and listening to the same song."
Carrie is in the middle of her Blown Away tour, with Hunter Hayes serving as her opening act. She will play in Iowa tonight (Dec. 14), followed by shows in Missouri, Tennessee and Georgia. See her concert schedule here.
