The Highwomen’s ‘Crowded Table’ Is Welcoming [LISTEN]
The new country supergroup the Highwomen aren't making fans wait until September to hear more from their debut album. On Friday (July 26), one week after releasing their debut single, "Redesigning Women," Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris shared a second new track, "Crowded Table."
"Crowded Table" puts the Highwomen's four-part harmonies in the spotlight. "I want a house with a crowded table / And a place by the fire for everyone," they sing in the chorus. "Let us take on the world while we're young and able / Then bring us back together when the day is done."
Carlile and Hemby co-wrote "Crowded Table" with Grammy Awards-winning songwriter Lori McKenna. The chorus' themes of acceptance and support run throughout the verses, too; it's a love song for not only romantic situations, and a reminder that we all need to make our own happiness.
The Highwomen -- the group's name was inspired by another iconic country supergroup, the Highwaymen (no, it's not a pot reference) -- came to be, in part, because of a desire to foster connections between female artists and help continue the strong tradition of women in country music that the collective's members enjoyed growing up. "Almost all of us are mothers of young girls. And we all grew up listening to country music. We recognize that we're in a time right now where our daughters don't have the same country music heroes that we had," Carlile explains.
"Our goal is simply to elevate all women and completely abandon the concept of competing with one another," she continues. "So that we can let as many women through the door as possible, and give our girls those country music heroes that we all had."
The Highwomen will make their official live debut this weekend (July 26-28), at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island. Their self-titled debut album is due out on Sept. 6.
