Sturgill Simpson traded '80s disco beats for slide guitar at a recent performance on 'Late Night With Seth Meyers.'

Simpson played a cover of When in Rome's 1988 hit single 'The Promise,' which appears on his critically acclaimed album, 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.' His version of the tune, while still paying homage, is about as different from the original hit as possible. The song made When in Rome a one-hit wonder, but Simpson's voice carries the tune in a different direction, highlighting the song's lyrics about love rather than hiding them behind a dance beat.

'Metamodern' has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album and landed at No. 10 on the Most-Played Americana Albums list for 2014. Simpson has seen a lot of success with the release, and he's already started working on new music.

"We're already starting another one -- I feel like we could make three records this year," his producer, Dave Cobb, tells Rolling Stone Country. "Maybe he doesn't release all three, but we should make them. We're already doing something totally different, and it will probably make a lot of people mad."

‘Metamodern Sounds in Country Music’ is available for download on iTunes and Amazon.
