Dierks Bentley Channels His Inner Tom Petty for ‘The Mountain’ Title Track [LISTEN]

After teasing the opening guitar lines in a video announcing his upcoming album, The Mountain, Dierks Bentley has unveiled the project's title track. Readers can press play above to listen to "The Mountain" in full.

The song takes on themes which are central to the album as a whole: the metaphor of conquering personal battles, one step at a time. "Well, I bet my soul on a six-string gamble / And I climbed like hell through the brush and the bramble / Even though I had my doubts / Told myself, 'Don't look down' / And I turned that hill into a pile of gravel / It was only a mountain," Bentley sings on the first verse of the track. The mood of "The Mountain," while recognizing the struggle it takes to get to the top, is ultimately victorious: Patience and perseverance, the lyrics imply, pay off in the end.

Bentley released the album's first single, "Woman Amen," on Jan. 17. Many of the album's tracks were written and recorded in Colorado, after Bentley found the initial inspiration for the project while playing at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, against the backdrop of mountainous scenery and the experience of getting away from Nashville and out into nature.

The country singer, who co-wrote 10 of the album's 13 songs, has said that The Mountain is a personal release for him, and is in part a meditation on his own self-reflection and struggle in the face of personal and professional challenges.

Bentley has also announced his 2018 Mountain High Tour, which will feature opening performances from Lanco and the Brothers Osborne. The tour is set to kick off on May 17 in Columbia, Md.
