A huge congrats to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus: They are the recipients of the 2019 CMA Awards Musical Event of the Year trophy, for their megahit "Hold Town Road." Their winning performance edges out Maren Morris and Brothers Osborne's "All My Favorite People," Brooks & Dunn and Luke Combs' "Brand New Man," Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton's "Dive Bar" and Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell's "What Happens in a Small Town."

Maddie & Tae revealed Lil Nas X and Cyrus' CMA Awards victory on Wednesday morning (Nov. 13), during a Good Morning America broadcast live from Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon ahead of the 2019 CMA Awards. As "Old Town Road" samples Nine Inch Nails' song "34 Ghosts IV," the rock band's Trent Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross are now first-time CMA Awards winners.

In 2019, Lil Nas X and Cyrus' remixed "Old Town Road" was ubiquitous, netting viral meme status, radio airplay and seemingly endless reduxes with a massive array of collaborators. The song first turned heads on the TikTok app, drawing even more attention after Billboard pulled it from the country charts, citing a lack of sufficient country elements to the song (though many posited that that decision was racially motivated). Despite Billboard's best effort, "Old Town Road" was a force that could not be stopped.

Diplo, Keith Urban, Young Thug, Mason Ramsey (a viral sensation in his own right, also known as "Walmart Boy") and more all contributed to various iterations of the track, which all the while continued to grow, expand and attract more fans. "Old Town Road" won Song of the Year at the 2019 MTV VMAs and, most recently, was certified diamond. Now, Cyrus and Lil Nas X add to their long list of accolades with a CMA trophy.

Lil Nas X and Cyrus aren't the only early 2019 CMA Awards winners: Kacey Musgraves' Music Video of the Year win was also announced during GMA on Wednesday morning.
