Taylor Swift is giving fans their first full listen to the much-talked-about title track of her upcoming album, Red. The tune explores a relationship post-breakup, a common theme for the 22-year-old in her songwriting. As she explained during the web chat announcing the new album, the song -- and indeed the whole album -- were such an intense, emotional experience that the bright color seemed appropriate. (Listen to 'Red' here.)

"Thinking about what that means to me and all the different emotions that are written about on this album -- they're all pretty much about the tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I've experienced in the last two years," Taylor noted. "All those emotions -- spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion -- in my mind, all those emotions are red. There's nothing in between; there is nothing beige about any of those feelings."

Comparing the relationship with the guy in the song to "driving a new Maserati down a dead end street," Taylor also evokes, rather appropriately, the season of autumn and the bright colors the leaves display just before they fall to the ground. The song's tempo and attitude fall somewhere in between the sassy kiss-off of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and the sweet, hopeful ballad "Begin Again."

Red, the album, will be released on Oct. 22 and will feature a hefty 16 tracks.
