Little Big Town’s ‘Pontoon’ Starts Summer Trends
Boat dealers may have Little Big Town to thank for an increase in sales this summer, due to the massive success of their new song, "Pontoon." Even Dierks Bentley is in on the craze, as he tweeted this past weekend, "yo @LBTmusic we're listenin to 'pontoon' out on Percy Priest Lake on the actual pontoon boat y'all used in the video!" He even posted a picture to prove it.
"This single has been so much fun," says LBT's Phillip Sweet. "I don't think we've ever seen a reaction like this to a song we've had out."
"Well, we've never had a song with motorboatin' in it before," bandmate Kimberly Schlapman interjects with a laugh. "Maybe that's what we've been missing this whole time!"
For those who may not know, 'motorboatin'' is a slang term for something that's comically sexual. Whether or not Little Big Town meant for the term to be literal or funny in the song (probably both!), T-shirts with "mmmmm...motorboatin'" on them are going fast from the band's Facebook page. "We had lots of orders for T-shirts from artists," LBT's Karen Fairchild is proud to report. "We've sent motorboatin' T-shirts to Miranda (Lambert), Kellie (Pickler) -- they would look good wearin' them!
"It's such fun to watch what is happening with this single," Karen continues. "You can't make something happen, we've learned that. Fans either connect to a song or they don't. When they latch on and really connect, it has a life of its own. They start tweeting about it, they get on Facebook and post funny things and it goes crazy! That's what is happening with this song ... it's going nuts."
No doubt more fans will be partying on pontoon boats, as temperatures continue to hit record highs. Austin, Texas registered 109 degrees this week, while Denver climbed to 105. If Dierks heads back to Percy Priest Lake this weekend, he'll be facing highs of 107.
"Someone sent us a newspaper article that said 'Pontoon Sales are on the rise,'" Philip says. "We'll take credit for that!"
Little Big Town is on the Rascal Flatts' Changed tour, along with the Eli Young Band and Edens Edge. On June 29, the tour travels to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio before taking a short July 4 break. They return to the road on July 6 in Bangor, Maine. See a full list of cities and dates on the trek here.
