Kelsea Ballerini brought her stripped-down new single "Homecoming Queen?" to the 2019 CMA Awards. The country star performed the song during the annual awards show on Wednesday night (Nov. 13).

Everything about Ballerini's performance was simple and stunning: she wore a sleek black jumpsuit and played a black guitar on a small stage, surrounded on all sides by the audience.

"What if I told you the world wouldn't end / If you started showing what's under your skin?" Ballerini sang in the chorus. "What if you let 'em all in on the lie? / Even the homecoming queen cries."

"Homecoming Queen?" is the first track that Ballerini has shared from her upcoming third studio album, which is expected to be released sometime in 2020. Co-written by Ballerini, Nicolle Galyon and Jimmy Robbins, the song uses the imagery of an all-American homecoming queen as "a metaphor for somebody that seemingly has it all together and polished from the outside looking in."

Fans can expect to see a different side of Ballerini, who has been open about her intentions to explore new territory, on this new project. In recent months, the 25-year-old has revealed that she's been writing alongside pop hitmakers Ed Sheeran, Ryan Tedder, Julia MichaelsLauv and Jon Bellion.

Ballerini is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year alongside Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves and Carrie Underwood at the 2019 CMA Awards.
