Jana Kramer says that the inspiration for her new single, "Beautiful Lies," came from real-life heartbreak: a very tough, and very public, time in her marriage to husband Michael Caussin. Readers can press play above to hear the song.

Kramer and Caussin got married Michael Caussin in 2015, and welcomed their first child, daughter Jolie Rae, in 2016. However, the couple separated later that year, as Caussin confessed to cheating and sought treatment for sex addiction.

“In that moment, I didn’t want to believe that it was true, and so instead, I wished I would’ve been told some beautiful lies to cover up what was going on,” Kramer tells People. She adds, "This song is exactly what happened with the break ... In that moment where I found out about everything, I felt like the whole world was just spinning — like everything was just flipped upside down and it was this awful nightmare.”

In the first verse of "Beautiful Lies," Kramer sings, "Surrounded by pieces of vows that were broken / Leavin' me speechless / It's like I don't know you / Everything we built is falling down." She paints the picture of a desperate broken heart, before leading into the song's chorus.

"Tell me I'm making this up / That this ain't for real / Take me back to the night I could feel / Like I was enough when love was just blind," Kramer sings. "I'm not ready for the truth to see the light / Make it up, make it pretty, I don't mind / Tell me beautiful lies."

In late 2017, Kramer and Caussin renewed their wedding vows; in November of 2018, they welcomed their second child, Jace Joseph. Kramer says that the songs she plans to release later this year will finish telling their story, from breakdown to healing.

“I can look back now and [to] know how far we’ve come is amazing,” she admits. “To be able to release these songs this year and to show the growth is the cherry on top. It just fills my heart knowing how hard we’ve worked ..."
