Billy Currington Tops the Charts With ‘Let Me Down Easy’

Billy Currington's 'Let Me Down Easy' has scored the top slot on both the Mediabase/Country Aircheck and Billboard country charts this week. Coming in at No. 2 on both charts is Jason Aldean's 'Don't You Wanna Stay' duet with Kelly Clarkson, followed by Thompson Square's 'Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not' at No. 3.

'Let Me Down Easy' has the soulful sound Billy loves, and as soon as he heard the song, which was written by Jennifer Hanson, Mark Nesler and Marty Dodson, he put it on hold for his 'Enjoy Yourself' album. The Georgia native got his soulful country sound when he was a kid listening to the smooth Rhythm and Blues notes emanating from the soul clubs as he walked the streets around Savannah, Ga., as well as by the radio stations that played that kind of music.

"There's a place called the Bayou on River Street, where a lot of soul music comes out of, all types of music in there," Billy tells The Boot. "I remember as a kid walking by -- that's all I could do is walk by and stand out there and listen, and knowing one day I wanted to go in there and get a little closer to that music. Places like that are all over Savannah ... I don't know I was so connected to it down there. And through radio, a big part of why I started singing soul music, listening to all those stations down there in my bedroom [laughs] with artists like Luther Vandross and Patti LaBelle."
