Sunny Sweeney has topped the Texas Music Chart with her latest single, 'Bad Girl Phase.' The song marks the first time a female has sat in the No. 1 spot in Texas in more than ten years.

The song, which was written by Brandy Clark, Jessie Jo Dillion and Shannon Wright, is the debut single from her latest 'Provoked' album

"We’d already picked out a lot of songs for the record, and I said, 'Man, we need one more with some sassitude, something that’s funny, but also true and kind of hell-raising,'" she recalls to The Boot. "I was pretty specific about what I was looking for, and when [my producer] brought that in, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, this is perfect.' And then I said, 'Who wrote that?' and he told me, and it’s three of my friends, and I said, 'Did they write that about me?'"

'Provoked' is her first release as an independent artist after releasing her previous two albums, 'Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame' and 'Concrete,' on major labels. But she isn't at all bitter about her experience in country music, and says her best days are still to come.

"I’m a huge believer in that everything happens for a reason, and if one thing were different, then you wouldn’t be where you are," Sweeney explains. "So you have to take the good and the bad, which, sometimes it’s hard to digest the bad, but you have to realize that it’s because of something else that either is going to happen in your future or that does happen currently. I’ve just had too many instances of that happen to me, where something good will end up happening, but it wouldn’t have happened if something bad hadn’t happened right before that."
