Runaway June Deliver a Reality Check About What Life’s REALLY Like on the Road
Sure, going on a national, arena-filling tour with Carrie Underwood might sound idyllic -- but don't be fooled. Runaway June can testify to the fact that life on the road isn't all adoring fans and glitzy outfits.
"I wish [people] knew how unglamorous it is on the road!" comments trio member Jennifer Wayne, laughing. "Everyone looks at Instagram and they're like, 'Oh my God, it's a party. Everything's so great.' ... We're a total mess 19 hours of the day. Then, the 25 minutes we're onstage, we might look good, but we're in our pajamas, like, half a second after the show."
Even the tightest-knit road family will chafe at the close quarters of a long tour. Musicians, bandmates and crew get to know each other well on the road -- in some cases, maybe a little too well.
"I walked in on our guitar player p--sing a little bit ago," Runaway June member Naomi Cooke deadpans. "Normally, it's like, 'Oh my God!' But this time, I was like, 'I don't even care now.' We all live in this little can on the road. It doesn't matter."
One thing that fans may not know is that, on a major arena tour, artists don't necessarily have hotel rooms. Rather, Runaway June live on a bus, and freshed up in the venues where they play.
"I'm like, putting my flip-flops on so I don't get athlete's foot in the back of this arena. It's totally open, no stalls. They're like prison showers, you know," Cooke adds, laughing. "I'm back there, like, 'I hope no one walks in!'"
Still, Runaway June aren't complaining; after all, the fact that they're showering in arenas means that they're also performing in arenas.
"It's a good problem to have," Cooke points out.
