Lauren Alaina Told Her Dad ‘Not to Watch’ Her Tango on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ [WATCH]
Lauren Alaina tried her hand at a daring, glamorous tango on Dancing With the Stars on Monday night (Sept. 30), complete with high kicks, twirls and a red sports car. For her performance in the second week of the competition, the country singer and her dancing partner, Gleb Savchenko, paid homage to 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
In keeping with the episode's theme of paying tribute to iconic movies, Alaina and Savchenko recreated the iconic scene in which Roberts' character leans into Gere's character's car, meeting him for the first time. "I'm obsessed with Julia Roberts' character. She was a fish out of water and she went into this whole new world, so I'm gonna try to do that with dancing," Alaina said prior to her performance. "I'm gonna bring the sass, the confidence -- what more could a girl want?"
Alaina and Savchenko's performance, set to Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman," netted 20 out of a possible 30 points from the judges. "Lauren, listen to me, that was a rrrracy tango, full throttle," judge Bruno Tonioli said, noting that Alaina lacked a little bit of balance during her performance. "Engage your core and learn to transfer your weight."
"This was full of attack, drive and purpose," added judge Len Goodman. "A little bit stop and start here and there, but I think the tango was excellent...for attitude and getting it out there, it was terrific."
"I told my dad not to watch this!" Alaina laughingly admitted to hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews after her performance. "I don't know how to say it on TV....I am the furthest thing, I'm the Christian country girl, and then I had to put my leg up on the hood of a car! I did not want my daddy watching that."
Each week, judges' and viewers' votes determine which Dancing With the Stars contestant goes home at the end of the episode. In week two, Alaina and Savchenko performed a confident paso doble, earning 19 out of 30 points. That week, Supremes singer Mary Wilson was eliminated from the show. On Monday, ex-NFL player Ray Lewis also left the competition due to an old injury in his foot that was being severely exacerbated by his dancing schedule.
Because of Lewis' departure from the show, no eliminations took place during Monday evening's episode.
In addition to Alaina and Wilson, Season 28's Dancing With the Stars cast includes actors James Van Der Beek and Kate Flannery, former Bachelorette contestant Hannah Brown, NBA player Lamar Odom, comedian Kel Mitchell and more. The show pairs celebrities with professional dancers, with the pairings competition in an elimination-style competition until a winner is crowned at the end of the season.
Alaina is far from the first country artist to compete on Dancing With the Stars: Wynonna Judd, Chuck Wicks, Sara Evans, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Jana Kramer also previously appeared on the show. Kellie Pickler won the show back in 2013, while country radio DJ Bobby Bones won the show's 27th season in 2018; in fact, it was Bones who convinced Alaina to accept the competitor spot.
