Kacey Musgraves Announces Sophomore Album, ‘Pageant Material’

Kacey Musgraves has finally announced the details of and release date for her long-awaited sophomore album.

Pageant Material will be released on June 23 on Mercury Nashville. Musgraves co-wrote all of the 13 songs on the project, which is the follow-up to her No. 1, Grammy-winning Same Trailer, Different Park record, released in 2013.

True to Musgraves' form, Pageant Material has already broken conventional methods.

"The majority of Pageant Material was recorded live -- which was a bit of a departure from Same Trailer -- and gave it more of a concise, classic sound," Musgraves shares. "All of the incredible musicians were in the same room playing on the entire record, and I think that spirit comes across.

"The last couple of years have done so much for me, and this project was really affected by that in the best way," she adds. "There are certain moments lyrically that still hit me hard even after listening so many times. It's a great glimpse into where my head is from Same Trailer to now."

The 26-year-old has already released the first single, "Biscuits," from the new album.

“One day, we were out, somewhere outside of Nashville,” Musgraves recalled of the song's inspiration at Tin Pan South 2015. "It was last July. It was me, Shane [McAnally], Josh [Osborne], Brandy [Clark] and Luke Laird. We all traded off writing with different [people] … we’d draw names out of a hat.

“We were like, ‘That has to be a song, the whole idea,’ and so we saved it,” Musgraves continued. “I feel like it was Brandy, because she’s like, if there’s a puzzle piece missing in a song, she’s just, like, infamous for [saying], ‘You know, this may not work, but what about this?’ And it always works. It’s mind blowing. You’re like, ‘Oh, you just pulled this out of your little pocket there?’"
