Dolly Parton says if she hadn't made it as a musician, she'd be happy as a missionary or a cosmetologist -- the latter thanks to her good friend, the late Tammy Wynette.

"She was a beautician back home, kept her license up to date every year, even though she became one of the big stars in the whole world," Dolly tells The New Yorker of her friend. "I used to always beg her, 'Can I have your card number so I can go buy stuff at the beauty-supply houses?'"

As Tammy was nearing the end of her life, Dolly did play the role of beautician. She would visit Tammy in the hospital and do her hair and nails.
