David Nail has served as the opening act for some of country music's biggest artists, including Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and Miranda Lambert, but now he is ready to headline his very own tour.

The singer will kick off his I'm a Fire Tour on Sept. 11, performing in more than 22 cities across the country.

"It's so much fun to open up for big acts and know that there's going to be five, ten, or even 15,000 people out there when you play, but it's always difficult to only play for 35 minutes," Nail explains to Rolling Stone Country. "I've always felt like we benefit so much more when we can really lay back and play an entire 75 to 90 minute show. We can show the range of the past three records."

One of the Missouri's natives stops will be in New York City, a coveted stop in an area not always welcoming to country music artists.

"That's the mecca for me. You move to Nashville to be a country music singer and I'd be lying if I said I thought I'd be playing New York City one day," Nail says. "I can remember the first time we played there, it was the most nervous I'd ever been. The label is there, you have a lot of press there, and fans. It's like playing a showcase in Nashville except that you're in the greatest city in the world. You try your best to treat it like any other show, but you know damn well it's nothing like every other show."

Nail's latest album, 'I'm a Fire,' earned him his second No.1 hit with the record's debut single, 'Whatever She's Got.' It was a high point that he was finally able to enjoy, after admitting he spent more than a decade struggling with depression.

“I carried around a lot of guilt because I had all these blessings in my life and yet I was still struggling to try to find some joy,” he admits. “I’d be first to admit that I wasn’t always the easiest guy to be around.”

After what he describes as "bottoming out," the tunesmith got much-needed help, allowing him to finally appreciate his success.

“I’m a singer, not a doctor,” he adds. “I decided it was time to seek out help, so I made some changes and leaned on other people rather than trying to figure it out all by myself, which is what I had done for years.”
