Dan + Shay Cover Tom Petty’s ‘Free Fallin’’ After Route 91 Harvest Festival Shooting
On Sunday night (Oct. 1), more than 50 people were killed and more than 500 people were injured when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. One day later, on Monday (Oct. 2), music legend Tom Petty died. On Tuesday (Oct. 3) morning, Dan + Shay paid tribute to both tragedies during an appearance on the Bobby Bones Show.
Readers can press play above to watch Dan + Shay perform a stripped-down version of Petty's classic "Free Fallin'." The emotional performance featured nothing but one acoustic guitar and Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney singing in harmony.
Country Artists Mourn Tom Petty
Dan + Shay's tribute to Petty and the Route 91 Harvest Festival victims came during a Bobby Bones Show dedicated to responding to the festival shooting. Bones himself performed at the festival on Saturday (Sept. 30).
"As you can tell, my head is still spinning," Bones tells Variety. "I’m confused and I’m angry and sad, and I’ve got to compartmentalize and also do a five-hour radio show and communicate while having no idea what happened to the hundreds of people I met the night before. It’s an odd, sad place to be."
