Craig Morgan has earned himself a number of hit singles since leaving the Army — after serving for 10 years as a paratrooper — to pursue a career in country music; there’s “Bonfire,” “Redneck Yacht Club,” “International Harvester” and the No. 1 hit “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” just to name a few. Morgan began his career as a songwriter and, in 2000, signed a recording contract and released his self-titled debut album.

Below, Morgan tells The Boot about the first time he heard one of his songs on the radio.

I was in Dickson, Tenn., driving down the road, by myself, on Highway 46 South, when I heard my first record. It was in 2000.

My first single was called “Something to Write Home About.” It had not really achieved any status on the charts yet, but it was a little AM station in my hometown where I lived. And I remember hearing it as I was driving down the road. I kept trying to eject the cassette, because I was thinking I had the cassette playing! And it wasn’t until the song finished and the on-air personality said, “Hey, that’s our own boy Craig Morgan with his new single, “Something to Write Home About,”” [that it hit me].

I just remember being excited and thinking, “Man! Maybe it’s working!” It was weird hearing myself on the radio, and I can tell you, it’s still weird. When I come on [now], I usually change the channel!
