Tim McGraw Movie Roles Are Subject to Perfect Timing
Even though Tim McGraw has been touring with Kenny Chesney this summer and working on new music, he has no immediate plans to abandon his successful acting career. Having starred in films such as "Friday Night Lights," "The Blind Side" and "Country Strong," he's just waiting for the right project and the right time.
"There's two or three things floating around, two or three projects that I really like," Tim says of potential film roles. "[There are] a couple of things I really like that I just couldn't find the time to do. The hardest thing is timing. You can read 50 scripts and not find anything that you like. It's much like finding songs; you listen to thousands of songs and you find those magic things, and for me it all has to start with a script, of course. If that's not right, then nothing's right."
Once Tim gets excited about a project, he admits timing is a challenge. "I have to find a script that's going to be done within the window," he explains. "It's a two- or three-month commitment to a movie when you decide to do one, not to mention the preparation before. You don't want to shortchange anybody. So finding something that you like, finding something that's being done in the time that I have available ... if those two things line up, them really wanting me to do it. I'm not at the point yet where I can just say, 'I want that role' and it's mine. I have to work for it in a lot of ways. There's some things that just get offered to me, but even then it's timing."
The timing is particularly challenging for Tim right now with the Brothers of the Sun tour with Kenny underway, a brand-new album coming out soon, and an upcoming series of concerts at the Venetian Las Vegas hotel and casino with lovely wife Faith Hill -- not to mention the busy schedules of their three daughters.
"This year is going to be tough because we have two daughters in high school this year," he notes. "The youngest daughter will be on the other campus by herself for the first time this year. Faith's making an album and her album's practically done and will be coming out soon, hopefully. And I'm in the middle of my album. So it's going to be tough to find time to make a movie. But that being said, there's two or three ... if they fall into place, then they'll be fun to do."
Though he's a generally lighthearted guy, Tim admits he's generally drawn to more serious roles. "When it comes to movies, I sort of like the darker side. I like heavy movies. I like heavy songs, too. I like fun, but when it comes to comedy movies, it's probably not my strong suit, I wouldn't think."
With a wide variety of roles and subjects to choose from, there is one type of film the athletic actor has always hoped to star in.
"I'd love to do a baseball movie. It would have to be an aging baseball player now," he says with a laugh. "[I'd] better do one before I'm the coach."
For now, movies are taking a back seat as Tim prepares fans for his new album with the brand-new hit, "Truck Yeah," which is rapidly climbing the charts.
