Tim McGraw Lets His Girls Take the Lead
Tim McGraw is certainly the odd man out at home with wife Faith Hill and their three daughters, Gracie, Maggie and Audrey. He says he learns something new every day about raising girls.
"It's tough. It's a learning process," he says. "You certainly can't be closed minded like, 'It's gonna be my way,' because I've tried that. I don't know if it's different with boys, but with my girls it just doesn't work that way. You've got to figure out how to deal with them on their terms."
McGraw has always joked that it's not easy living in a house full of estrogen. He says the girls definitely set the pace when it comes to their family relationships.
"They create our relationship," McGraw is quick to admit, adding that they each have their own personalities, likes and dislikes. "They have their own way of dealing with you and communicating with you. You have to be able to deal with it on their terms and their level of how they like to be dealt with and they're all different."
McGraw says he tries to spend group time and one-on-one time with each girl. "Even though we have a lot of family time, it's nice to have that individual time as well. You sort of know when one needs it more than the other; they let me know in subtle ways. When you think they don't want to be with you is when they want to be with you the most."
The singer says the girls are constantly saying and doing things that make him laugh or show him how deep they really can be. "They can say these simple things that make you stop and think. Gracie and Audrey were talking about something one day, and Audrey told Gracie, 'I'm tired of being the little one.' Gracie told her, 'I used to be little like you, and then I grew up to be me.' Audrey was like, 'Wow!' ... and I always think about that statement -- 'I grew up to be me.' That's something to shoot for."
Perhaps Tim has the title for a new song -- with Gracie as a co-writer, of course.
