Thomas Rhett Says Adopted Daughter Willa Is Adapting ‘Way Better Than We Ever Thought She Would’

Thomas Rhett has a job much more important -- and rewarding -- than being one of the biggest stars in country music right now. The singer, along with his wife Lauren, recently became proud parents to a little girl, Willa, whom they adopted from Uganda, Africa, and they will also soon welcome their first biological child.

"I walked offstage and changed a dirty diaper immediately, so that’s kind of what life has become," Rhett shared with The Boot and other reporters at a recent media event. "But Willa has just adapted way better than we ever thought she would. Going from where she came from to being here, I thought that she would be overwhelmed and really shy. But she’s never met a stranger. You can bring her into a huge, crowded room, and she’s like the life of the party, or she can chill and watch Moana for the 58th time this week."

Although Rhett is already making plans to take both children on the road, he admits he is unsure what the next few years will actually look like for his family.

"We don’t have any idea what we’re doing. At all," Rhett concedes. "I feel like we kind of got spoiled on the front end, because Willa sleeps 12 hours a night, so that’s not going to happen when the newborn comes.

"But every time Willa goes to touch Lauren’s stomach, we’ll be like, ‘Your new sister’s inside there,'" he adds. "Obviously she doesn’t know it, but we’re kind of trying to keep saying our newborn’s name and trying to get her used to the fact that there will be a new sister here in about a month."

Still, the "Craving You" singer says he would rather figure out how to adjust to the family of four being on the road together than to go long stretches of time without seeing his girls.

“I’ve done all I can to talk to people like Dierks [Bentley] and Luke [Bryan], and all these people that have children and also travel,” Rhett says. “I think my biggest fear is looking at my daughter and being like, ‘Yeah, I gotta go on the road for the weekend;’ Dierks always talks about his girls holding onto his legs and stuff. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to deal with that, but people do it, and it will become a new normal.”
