It's news that you never hope to receive, but it's now a reality in Taylor Swift's family: Her mom, Andrea Swift, has been diagnosed with cancer.

Fans are used to Swift being transparent and personal not only in her songs but on social media. The singer used her Tumblr to share the sad news.

"I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important, and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you," Swift writes. "Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now."

Swift explains that for Christmas this year, she asked her mom to go to the doctor and get screened for any health issues. Apparently, the singer had been worried about her mom's health -- and her mom obliged even though "[t]here were no red flags, and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it."

When the results came in, sadly, it was the type of news that cuts to the core. Swift's next words are painful -- but all too real.

"The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer," she says. "I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know."

The "Style" singer finishes off her post by saying that her mom wanted to spread the word about being proactive with your health -- especially parents. Fans know that Andrea Swift has been an integral part of Swift's life; besides being her mama, she's been her friend. In fact, Swift says, "She's always been the friend that was always there. There were times when, in middle school and junior high, that I didn't have a lot of friends. But my mom was always my friend."

Andrea Swift has also been her daughter's cheerleader, road buddy, stage mom (when she needs to be) and so much more.

"She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight," Swift concludes. "Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this."

The Boot sends our love and warm thoughts to Swift and her entire family during this difficult time.
