Steve Holy OKs Record Label’s ‘Every Five Years’ Mentality

In today's digital age, musicians have to be smart about when to release their albums, and that's exactly what country star Steve Holy has been doing for ten years -- but not without a few frustrations.

"It's so much sweeter this time," the singer tells Billboard, referring to his upcoming CD, 'Love Don't Run.' "It's weird -- my first album came out back in 2001, then we didn't have another out until 2006. I know that songs last longer on the charts now than they used to, so you're naturally going to have a larger gap between albums, but I don't think that every five years was the plan."

The singer's latest project (due out Sept. 13 on Curb Records) has garnered a lot of hype over the past five years, as well as a few gripes from fans. "I understand why Curb operates the way they do," says Steve. "They used to get laughed at. People would ask me, 'Why are they doing it this way?' But, I don't know if you've noticed, but everyone else is starting to do that."

Steve also describes how he almost lost the album's title track to fellow singer Ronnie Dunn. "There was a glitch," he admits. "We got the OK to cut it. They said, 'Yes, it's yours.' The day before we go in to cut the song they say, 'Oh, by the way, Ronnie Dunn has it on hold, and he's cutting it tomorrow!"

Thankfully it all worked out for Steve, because 48 hours later the singer found out that Ronnie's recording didn't quite work out. In the end, he's embraced the way things are done at his record label -- which means we may be hearing 'Love Don't Run' for a couple of years to come!
