A group of Scotty McCreery fans, dubbed the "Southern Belles," will gather this Saturday (Sept. 26) to participate in the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, the proceeds of which benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The singer reveals that the group, which takes its name from his current single, "Southern Belle," was formed by his fan club, without any input from him -- and he's honored by the gesture.

"We heard about it through the fan club," McCreery tells The Boot. "They told us about it. But I definitely gave it the go-ahead. I said it was a good idea."

The singer, who has been a supporter of St. Jude over the past few years, was thrilled to lend his name, and hopefully his time, to support the worthwhile cause.

"Hopefully my schedule works out where I can go see the people walking, or do something with them," he says. "St. Jude is the official charity for country music, so we’ve done a lot of work with them, and it’s cool to be a part of something in another way."

While McCreery loves using his notoriety for worthwhile causes, such as St. Jude, the Season 10 American Idol winner admits that he still grapples with the fact that so many people know who he is. That doesn't mean he's not proud of his loyal following, though.

"If you think back to just a couple years ago, it’s weird," he admits. "Nowadays, I’m glad they’re there, because they are awesome fans. We see them every show. Some of them come to plenty of shows a year, so we see them a lot."

Fans who would like to join the Southern Belles for the charity walk or donate money (or both) can visit the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer website for more information. All participants will be entered into a drawing to win a prize pack.

McCreery will wrap up his run as the opening act on Rascal FlattsRiot Tour during the first week of October, then will finish the year by headlining his own shows. A list of all of his upcoming concerts can be found on his website.
