Gospel group Point of Grace are one of the most successful Christian music acts of the past 20 years, with 27 No. 1 singles earned and more than seven million albums sold, but for their new album, the trio decided to try something new.

Directions Home (Songs We Love, Songs You Know), which was released on April 7, features the trio -- Shelley Breen, Denise Jones and Leigh Cappillino -- singing covers, including several country hits. The record features Point of Grace's versions of Carrie Underwood's recent hit, "Something in the Water," Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," "Only Love" by Wynonna Judd and Trace Adkins' "Home."

“We each had to bring in five songs that we wanted to cover,” Cappillino recalls. “When we were about six deep, we realized that all the songs related to the journey of life.”

Jones notes, "When we do familiar songs, it always seems to bring people in. And if you pay attention to what’s happening in society, those great shows like The Voice and American Idol are delivering the familiar, but with an edge. There’s this sense of nostalgia. You remember hearing the song, but now we’re seeing a new generation of music lovers watching the creativity of the original artist and then taking it in their own way."

Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs both appear on the record as well, on its only two non-cover songs: Gill joins Point of Grace on "Directions Home," written by songwriter Stephanie Chapman -- who is the wife of producer Nathan Chapman -- while Skaggs is featured on "Two Roads," by Cindy and Lola Morgan. The entire project was co-produced by Andy Leftwich, a member of Skaggs' group, Kentucky Thunder. His wife Rachel helped arrange the songs.

“A lot of people ask us who we would want to sing with,” Jones says. “Vince and Ricky are both often mentioned. They are phenomenal musicians and extraordinary voices. We had no idea it was even a hope and a prayer for us to collaborate with them. Andy was the main reason it actually happened.”

Adds Cappillino, "Andy and Rachel are so gifted and don’t even realize how talented they are. They are the reason this album was a fun and joyful process. Each day was better than the next.”
