Mindy McCready Proclaims, ‘I Did the Right Thing’

The Mindy McCready saga continues, as the embattled country singer continues to publicly defend herself in her dramatic child custody case. Speaking exclusively to ABC's '20/20,' in a segment that will air on Friday, Dec. 9, Mindy admits that she defied the law and took her son Zander from his grandparents because, she claims, it was "the right thing to do."

"I know there are rules that are written down that we're supposed to follow, and guidelines that we're supposed to follow, but there's a difference between right and wrong, and right and wrong in my opinion should come first, always," Mindy tells ABC.

Mindy took her son from his legal guardian, her mother, Gayle Inge, fleeing from Florida the week after Thanksgiving, bound for Nashville. This resulted in a man-hunt for the troubled singer and her little boy, who were eventually found at a home in Heber Springs, Ark. on Dec. 2, hiding in a closet. Though she could face charges as serious as federal kidnapping, Mindy has no regrets.

"[I couldn't] ever think that me taking my own child, that I carried for nine months, that I gave birth to in the hospital by myself, would ever be breaking the law," she told '20/20.'

The 36-year-old singer, who has announced that she is pregnant with twins, also described the night Zander was taken from her by US Marshals with -- she claims -- guns drawn. "He was screaming, 'Please don't touch me, please don't touch me, please don't touch my mommy. Please, leave me alone, I want to be with my mommy.'"

Mindy has claimed that her mother and step-father have caused physical and emotional distress to Zander, something they vehemently deny.

The singer appeared in court on Monday (Dec. 5) in what was a private hearing with sealed proceedings. Leaving the Arkansas courthouse, she told reporters that she was happy with the outcome, however she did not reveal whether or not she retained custody of the child.
