Maddie & Tae Turn the Tables on Bro Country With ‘Girl in a Country Song’ Video
Hot new duo Maddie & Tae already made waves with their debut single, 'Girl in a Country Song,' and now they're about to make an even bigger splash with the song's video.
The teenagers -- Maddie Marlow is 19, while Tae Dye is 18 -- begin the video in the typical way, with two young, attractive, scantily-clad women walking down a country road, to the appreciation of a group of men sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck. But then the tables turn, and instead of the women, the men act out various scenes in barely-there clothes. While humorous, it also sheds light on the stereotypes that have become so prevalent in country music.
"The video helps us put the point across that it's hard being a girl in a country song," Marlow tells Rolling Stone Country. "If the guys had to live up to the expectations that we do, I don't think they could do it either."
The song playfully calls out songs by some of country music's leading men, including Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett, Chris Young and Billy Currington, which undoubtedly is why the tune debuted at No. 39 on the charts.
"The song is so topical and it's what's going on right now," Dye says. "I think that's why it's been moving so fast."
'Girl in a Country Song' is their first single from their upcoming album, which will be released on Dot Records. Maddie & Tae will perform the song on the 'Today' show on Aug. 11.
