Maddie & Tae Need Their Parents’ Advice in ‘Die From a Broken Heart’ [LISTEN]
Maddie & Tae are calling Mom and Dad in their new single "Die From a Broken Heart." Readers can press play above to hear the track.
Written by Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye along with Jonathan Singleton and Deric Ruttan, "Die From a Broken Heart" examines a devastating breakup through a call home. The practical advice that Marlow and Dye are asking for at first -- how to get rid of red wine and mascara stains, how to fix a screen door -- hints at the true nature of their call.
"How does he sleep at night / Mama, the nerve of this guy / To leave me, so easy," Maddie & Tae sing in the chorus of "Die From a Broken Heart." "Am I gonna be alright? / I wanna kick myself for fallin' so hard / Mama, can you you from a broken heart?"
"Every time I hear that song," Dye told The Boot in late 2018, "I want to tear up."
According to Marlow and Dye, "Die From a Broken Heart" is their way of introducing fans to the second phase of their upcoming sophomore album, a concept record about a relationship. Whereas their recent single "Friends Don't" is from the disc's first phase, about new love, this new track is part of the album's heartbreak phase. (The third phase is redemption.)
"It's through the eyes of a relationship, but it's kind of representative of what we went through the past two years, just the highest of highs and the lowest of lows," says Marlow of the album, "and then, how to make your trials and everything you go through make you stronger, and how you come back from that."
That the record is a concept album was "completely unintentional," adds Dye. "We've gone through a lot in the past couple years, personally and professionally, and we feel like this story ... is us."
Indeed, it's been a rocky couple of years for Marlow and Dye: Just as they had finished up writing the songs for a sophomore record in 2017, their label, Dot Records, shut down, leaving the country duo uncertain about when -- and if -- their new music would see the light of day. Now, however, they are signed to Universal Music Nashville and, in addition to prepping their album for release, they will release an EP, One Heart to Another, on April 26.
Marlow and Dye co-wrote all five of the songs on One Heart to Another; their co-writers include Jon Nite, Deric Ruttan, Barry Dean and Emily Weisband. They've been working with Jimmy Robbins and Derek Wells as producers.
"[They're] two guys that we trust the most in this town, musically, as friends," Marlow says. "We wanted to collaborate with people that would let us speak up ... people that we were really close to, just to that where we felt comfortable saying what we wanted."
"Die From a Broken Heart" will go for adds at country radio on May 6. Later that month, Maddie & Tae will hit the road with Carrie Underwood, on her 2019 Cry Pretty Tour 360.
