John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John Christmas Album Reunites Iconic Pair
For the first time in almost 30 years, "Grease" stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are back together for a very special musical project. This Christmas is an album of duets featuring the two global superstars, along with some very special guests, including Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and James Taylor.
The two stars last worked together in the 1983 film, "Two of a Kind," although they have appeared together at special events from time to time since "Grease," which would go on to become the most successful movie-musical of all-time.
Travolta conceived the idea for an album together after receiving a text from his "Grease" co-star during the holiday season. The text informed the actor that the pair's 1978 smash, "You're the One That I Want," had just become the best-selling duet in pop music history.
"From the moment we decided to do this, magic happened," says Travolta, the star of hundreds of other films, including "Pulp Fiction," "Hairspray" and "Saturday Night Fever." "Everyone we contacted agreed to do it."
"With our busy schedules, I don't know how we got it done," adds Newton-John, whose relationship with country fans dates back more than 40 years, and covers such huge crossover hits as "Please Mr. Please," "I Honestly Love You" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You." "John and I have always connected. That's never gone away. When we're together, we have a good laugh and feel bonded to one another. We've been through some amazing experiences together."
A dozen seasonal classics are joined by the original song, "I Think You Might Like It," described in a press release about the collection as a sequel to the "Grease" smash, "You're the One That I Want." The new song was penned by the writer/producer of that iconic hit, John Farrar.
"My desire was to make This Christmas an intimate album, not something too ostentatious or showy," says Travolta. "I wanted people to be able to play it around the house or in the car during the holidays and make us part of your celebration."
Both John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are donating their artist proceeds from the album equally to the Jett Travolta Foundation, to combat children's disabilities, including autism and seizures, and to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia.
This Christmas will be available Nov. 13 from Universal Music Enterprises. Pre-order the album here.
