Watch John Mayer Honor Glen Campbell in Nashville With ‘Gentle on My Mind’
While performing in Nashville on Tuesday night (Aug. 8), John Mayer paid tribute to dearly departed country legend Glen Campbell. Readers can press play above to watch Mayer's performance.
In the midst of a stop at Music City’s Bridgestone Arena on his The Search for Everything Tour, Mayer played a tender version of Campbell’s iconic song “Gentle on My Mind.” Mayer performed the song alone onstage, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.
“Whether I play it right or wrong,” said Mayer as he introduced the song, “I’d rather have played it.”
Judging by the crowd’s overwhelmingly positive response, concertgoers weren’t exactly upset about hearing the classic tune in the aftermath of Campbell’s death.
Campbell died Tuesday at 81 years old, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Written by John Hartford, “Gentle on My Mind” was released by the Rhinestone Cowboy as a single in 1967. The song was also used as the theme to his CBS variety show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and has been covered by numerous artists, including Dean Martin and the Band Perry.
Earlier this year, Mayer released his first single to country radio, called “In the Blood.” The song appears on his first studio album since 2013, The Search for Everything. Mayer’s tour continues Wednesday night (Aug. 9) in New Orleans, La.
