On Wednesday (Aug. 7), Chris Stapleton and John Mayer wrote a song together. On Thursday (Aug. 8), the two singer-songwriters debuted the brand-new track live in concert at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.

Per concergoers at Mayer's Music City show, the Stapleton / Mayer collaboration is called "I Just Remembered That I Didn't Care." That refrain plays prominently in the song's chorus, during which Stapleton adds harmonies.

"I said, 'You wanna do one of my songs or one of your songs?' And he said, 'We could do either or we could just write a song and play it,'" Mayer told the crowd, recounting his and Stapleton's earlier conversation (quote via Billboard). "I said, 'Challenge accepted."

Mayer takes lead on the first verse, while Stapleton holds down the second, which prompted cheers from his hometown crowd on Thursday night. The song is upbeat and features bongos throughout.

Stapleton stayed onstage after the new song ended to perform Mayer's song "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" with him. That track is from Mayer's 2006 album Continuum.

Mayer's Nashville concert was part of a summertime solo tour. The talented guitarist, who first rose to fame in the early 2000s, has been on the road recently with Dead & Company.

Mayer released his newest album, The Search for Everything, in 2017. The project includes a song called "In the Blood" that he promoted to country radio that spring. In the past, Mayer has collaborated with country stars including Taylor SwiftKeith Urban and the Zac Brown Band.

Stapleton is on the road himself this summer, for his 2019 All-American Road Show. His last new album, From A Room, Vol. 1 and 2, arrived in 2017 as well. Prior to breaking out as an artist in his own right, Stapleton made a name for himself in Nashville as a well-loved songwriter, and continues to write for both himself and others. He's also collaborated with other artists outside of country music, including Justin Timberlake and Pink.
