Ingrid Andress Redefines ‘Lady Like’ in New Single [LISTEN]

As a co-writer with Charli XCX, Alicia Keys and Sam Hunt, Ingrid Andress has left her mark behind the scenes on mainstream pop, R&B and country music. Now, the skilled lyricist and multi-instrumentalist is taking center stage with her own, deeply personal take on country storytelling and piano-driven pop, as heard on her debut single "Lady Like."

Andress' first song as a major-label solo artist captures the lyrical candidness expected from one of Atlantic Records / Warner Music Nashville's potential breakout artists. While others might feel intimidated by sharing such a personal takedown of social norms early in their career, Andress seems giddy that her first single reveals so much about its singer.

"After one listen, you know exactly who I am," she tells The Boot. "So I think, yeah, as a first song -- with the other songs, I’m so excited for those, but I feel like it’s for that exact reason. I would wanna hang out with me after hearing that song. I would be like, ‘Oh, okay, this chick, this is what she’s about. I get who she is.’"

As songwriters across popular genres can attest, deeply personal songs often end up having a universal appeal. "What’s crazy is that I thought it was very specific to me, but a lot of people come up to me after I sing that song being like, ‘I totally relate to that,'" Andress adds. "And it’s people of all different kinds. Even guys come up to me and are like, ‘Yeah, I’m a lady like that!’ I’m like, ‘You aaaare!’"

Andress is one of The Boot's 2019 Artists to Watch, as well as a member of CMT's Next Women of Country Class of 2019. A Colorado native, her family traveled often as she was growing up, and her early songs were shaped by the constantly changing landscape that surrounded her. Andress sharpened her songwriting skills as a student at Boston's Berklee College of Music.
