Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood Make a Surprise Appearance at the Grand Ole Opry

Grand Ole Opry audience members got quite a surprise on Friday night (June 19): Opry members Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood made a surprise appearance at the famed venue.

Yearwood took the stage first, after being introduced by Vince Gill, and coyly introduced Brooks by telling the audience, “I didn’t have a chance to bring my band or call them or anything, but luckily, I live with a Grand Ole Opry member, so if you all would make welcome my guitar player tonight, my husband, Mr. Garth Brooks!”

The two launched into Yearwood's debut single and first No. 1 hit, "She's in Love With the Boy," then sang a series of cover tunes, including "After the Fire is Gone" by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn; Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius' "I Don't Want to Have to Marry You;" and "Golden Ring" by George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

“We rehearsed in the truck on the way here, so ...” Yearwood said before beginning the medley, with Brooks humorously quipping, “Good luck!”

The couple is currently crossing the country on Brooks' World Tour. They played in Birmingham, Ala., the weekend before their Opry appearance and will next head to Houston, for a series of shows beginning this weekend. Brooks, a seasoned performer who continues to break ticket sales records all over the country, insists that he is more interested in having a good time than making money while on the road.

“For me, I don’t care about the dollar bill bottom line, I care about the memories of, did I have fun there? Did we get to do stuff as a crew there, as a band there?” he says. “You betcha, we’re going back to all the fun places.”
