Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5′ Premieres on Broadway
'9 to 5: The Musical' makes its Broadway debut tonight. The play, based on the hit 1980 movie, stars Allison Janney in the role originated by Lily Tomlin, Stephanie J. Block as the character Jane Fonda played in the film and Megan Hilty as Dolly Parton's character, Doralee. Dolly wrote all of the music for the play, receiving rave reviews and the L.A. Drama Critics Circle's Musical Score Award for her work.
"I was excited to get to even write that, for them to ask me to write the words and the music," Dolly tells The Boot. "I'm happy to see that people are accepting it. We've got a wonderful cast, and I'm just proud to be a part of the whole ensemble."
The play ended its run in Los Angeles in October. It is scheduled to stay in New York through at least January 2010, if not longer.
Dolly's next musical step could be a bit more personal. We asked the country icon if it's true that she's writing a musical about her life story.
"I've been doing that for a while, I'm still writing it," she explains to us of the ongoing project. "But we may do a movie of my life that's maybe not necessarily a musical. It's a movie that will have music in it, like the Johnny Cash story or 'Coal Miner's Daughter,' that sort of thing. So I've got a lot of plans in the works. I plan to write more music and some children's books. So I've got a lot on my plate!"
