Dolly Parton’s ‘Coat of Many Colors’ TV Movie Earns a Sequel
A sequel to Dolly Parton's hit TV movie Coat of Many Colors is in the works. Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love will air in 2016.
According to a press release, Christmas of Many Colors "is the next chapter in the life of young Dolly Parton." During an unexpected blizzard, the Parton family -- specifically, Parton's father and his children -- find themselves sacrificing their own wants and needs for a special gift for Parton's mother, while an important person in Parton's life starts to recognize that she is meant for musical stardom.
Alyvia Alyn Lind will revise her role as a young Parton, while Jennifer Nettles and Ricky Schroder will return as Parton's parents. Coat of Many Colors director Stephen Herek has signed on again as well, with Pamela K. Long writing the script. Long, Sam Haskell and Dollly Parton will be the movie's executive producers.
“It’s no secret that everyone loves Dolly Parton, and the response to our first movie was overwhelming, both in terms of the size of the audience and outpouring of love for a film with family values and faith,” says Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment. “So it felt like a no-brainer to bring this talented cast back together and tell another compelling holiday story culled from Dolly’s own life growing up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Her spirit and belief in God — and her music — will infuse this movie with the true spirit of Dolly Parton.”
Coat of Many Colors, which aired in December of 2015, earned 15.9 million viewers overall. It was the most-watched film on broadcast or cable TV in nearly seven years.
“I was so overwhelmed and touched by how many people watched Coat of Many Colors and their reaction to it,” Parton says. “The song "Coat of Many Colors," of course, has always been my favorite and has touched so many people through the years, especially me ... I am so happy to share this story with the viewers and to say there is so much more to tell because mine truly has been a life of many colors. I hope the viewers will fall in love all over again.”
An air date for Christmas of Many Colors will be announced at a later date. In addition to the Coat of Many Colors sequel, fans can also expect to see another made-for-TV movie from Parton, based on her song "Jolene," soon.
