Did Faith Hill lip sync at the Super Bowl? And if so, is Garth Brooks partly to blame?
ABC News is among many sources speculating that both Hill, who sang 'America the Beautiful,' and Jennifer Hudson, who sang the national anthem, lip synced their performances before Sunday's big game. But don't be too shocked -- according to insiders, these days pre-recording a performance for a prominent broadcast is standard practice. And it's not necessarily the artist's choice.
"That's the right way to do it," the Super Bowl pregame show's producer,
Rickey Minor, tells the Associated Press. "There's too many variables to go live ... the slightest glitch would devastate the performance."
Apparently the biggest "glitch" of all came in 1993, when Garth Brooks threatened to walk out minutes before his Super Bowl performance unless NBC would agree to play his new music video. The country superstar had not pre-recorded the anthem, meaning the NFL had nothing to play in Brooks' place if he made good on his threat. Since that incident, the league has required artists to provide a backup recording.
But performing to a pre-recorded track doesn't mean the artist necessarily needs one. Even Whitney Houston's famous 1991 rendition of the national anthem was lip-synced, and more recently, Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman used a pre-recording for their performance at President Obama's inauguration.
So the speculation of Hill's lip-syncing may come as a surprise (and perhaps a disappointment) to some, but for a broadcast viewed by nearly 100 million people, it was likely just a precautionary step.
