Did Mindy McCready play a role in her boyfriend's death? As the country singer mourns the loss of the man she called her "soulmate," David Wilson, she is now having to also weather claims that she may have had something to do with his death.

The 34-year-old music producer died Jan. 13 from what was initially declared a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But police now insist the cause of death has not yet been determined.

"This is a very high-profile case and we need to make sure it's investigated as thoroughly as possible. It could take weeks for the state crime lab to complete tests on Mr. Wilson's body, and if you'll notice, it was Mindy McCready's spokesperson -- not anyone involved in the investigation -- who made the determination that Mr. Wilson's death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss tells the National Enquirer.

Calls to the Cleburne County Sheriff's department to verify the legitimacy of Moss' quote have not been returned.

The U.K.'s Daily Mail Online is reporting that McCready is allegedly under investigation in the case, as details emerge that indicate that the couple's relationship had been rocky. The National Enquirer further quotes a so-called "source" as saying Wilson had just told McCready he was leaving her.

"David had been carrying on an affair for many weeks before the shooting," the unidentified source claims. "When Mindy found out, it fueled a lot of very heated fights. The tension in their household became so unbearable that David packed up and left."

The Enquirer claims that McCready was the one who made the 9-1-1 call after the shooting, and told investigators that she didn't hear the gunshot, as her TV was on at a high volume. The operator, according to the gossip rag, allegedly heard a man moaning in the background.

McCready's spokesperson tells The Boot that they are working with authorities to obtain a formal statement on the status of the David Wilson investigation and says they hope that statement will "eliminate the erroneous information" in the tabloid reports.

It should be noted that McCready is not an official suspect at this time. The 37-year-old singer has a 9-month-old son with Wilson and a 6-year-old son from a previous relationship. After a long legal battle, she won custody of her oldest son just weeks before Wilson's death. McCready's rep says the singer's late boyfriend was very much a father figure to both boys and that "they had a lot to celebrate."

McCready was also celebrating newfound sobriety, after successfully completing a stint on the reality TV show, "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew." Before the show, the troubled singer had been living a life worthy of a soap opera. She was hospitalized for two admitted suicide attempts, with the latest coming in 2008 after her decade-long affair with married baseball star Roger Clemens was exposed. She has also served two jail sentences for various charges, with most relating to drug and alcohol-fueled crimes. After seemingly turning her life around, the "Ten Thousand Angels" singer made headlines again when she took her oldest son from her mother, who was his legal guardian at the time, fleeing Florida and sending police on a hunt all the way to Wilson's Arkansas home, where she was found hiding in a closet.

McCready is now said to be surrounded by family and friends in Arkansas, as she mourns the loss of her youngest son's father and weathers the rumors surrounding his death.
