The circumstances behind David Wilson's death are even more mysterious, now that details are emerging about the life he shared with girlfriend Mindy McCready.

The 34-year-old music producer died Sunday (Jan. 13) from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found inside the Arkansas home he shared with the country singer, their 9-month-old son, Zayne, and McCready's 6-year-old son, Zander, from a previous relationship. Wilson was by his girlfriend's side during a bitter custody battle over Zander ... which had a happy ending for the couple just a few weeks ago.

"David and Mindy just recently celebrated getting back full custody of Zander right before Christmas," the singer's publicist tells E! News. "The case went to the Supreme Court and Mindy won. Although David was not Zander's birth father, David was his father in every measure of the word. They had a lot to celebrate."

The U.K's MailOnline quotes two "close friends" of Wilson's as saying that they are shocked by his suicide, as he was "always in good spirits." McCready's former lawyer, James Moon, tells the site that Wilson was very protective and supportive of the "Ten Thousand Angels" singer. "She was always smiling when she was around him, and when she found out she was pregnant she was ecstatic," Moon recalls. "She made a comment to the extent that she felt that she had finally found the one person she was supposed to be with ... I never heard any arguments or any strong words between them."

McCready herself reportedly attempted suicide twice, in 2005 and 2008. She was also hospitalized in 2010 after a drug overdose. But in the past two years, the embattled country star has seemingly turned her life around, successfully completing a stint on "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" and, according to her friends, remaining clean and sober for the sake of her children.

The singer is now surrounded by family and friends as she grieves the loss of the man she called her "soulmate." "He was a caregiver and guiding hand to our sons, Zander and Zayne. He was a precious gift from God to all of us," she writes in a statement. "David loved and he was loved. Those who knew and loved him will miss him; those who did not know David missed the opportunity to know a truly loving and gifted man."
