Craig Campbell: Hearing Himself on the Radio for the First Time Was a ‘Glorious Moment’
Craig Campbell's debut single, "Family Man," was an important song for the country artist in many respects. Its message of hard-working, blue-collar values rang true to him, making it the perfect track to release as a brand-new artist.
The song took on a whole new meaning, however, after it became the first of his songs that Campbell ever heard on country radio. Read on to learn the story of that first time he heard it, told in the singer's own words.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was on my radio tour, and we were coming through -- actually, we were heading back home from Atlanta, [Ga.] It was about 8 o'clock at night, I guess, and we had just lost our Atlanta station, so we switched over to the Chattanooga, [Tenn.] station.
We just had a low volume on the radio. Everybody was tired. And then we heard this song come on the radio, and we were like -- at first we didn't realize what was going on, and then it went from not paying attention to being like, "I know this song!"
We, all at the same time -- it was three of us, [my fiddle player and radio rep at the time and me] in the car -- we all said, "Oh, this is it!" And it was "Family Man," on the radio. We started high-fiving each other and singing, turned it up and started singing along like a bunch of idiots. It was a glorious moment.
Now, [when I hear my song on the radio], I turn it up, mainly, and roll the windows down so everybody else can hear it.
