Chris Young Selects ‘Sober Saturday Night’, Featuring Vince Gill, for New Single [LISTEN]
How do you follow a smash-hit duet that became the fastest-rising single of your career? If you're Chris Young, you double down and release another single featuring a very special guest. The country star has announced that his third single from I'm Comin' Over will be "Sober Saturday Night," a collaboration with Vince Gill.
When "Sober Saturday Night" begins, the lyrics make it sound like a hangover: "I feel terrible / Sunlight's hurting my eyes / So I pull the shades / And I make my place / As black as night." But, as the tune progresses, it becomes clear that Young isn't singing about waking up with a headache; he's singing about waking up alone.
The chorus describes what Young is really doing: He's not hungover, and he's "all messed up, all strung out" but "not out there getting high." He confesses, "Ain't no whiskey strong enough to make things right / I'm just getting over another sober Saturday night."
Gill and Young harmonize flawlessly throughout the song. Listeners will be able to picture the 30-year-old Young grinning while recording with one of his musical idols.
“I grew up loving Vince Gill,” Young says. "That guy sounds just like his record — or better than his record. I’ve always been such a fan. I asked him to do it. He was like, ‘Come over to my house.’ So I got to sit in Vince Gill’s studio and hang out with him. It was a great day.”
"Sober Saturday Night" will have a lot to live up to: Young's previous single, "Think of You," featuring Cassadee Pope, recently hit No. 1.
I’m Comin’ Over is available on iTunes.
