Chris Stapleton Joins Justin Timberlake for Post-Super Bowl LII ‘Fallon’ Performance [WATCH]
Chris Stapleton didn't show up during Justin Timberlake's halftime show at Super Bowl LII on Sunday night (Feb. 4) -- but he was in Minneapolis, Minn. Stapleton turned up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon post-Super Bowl, to sing with Timberlake to close out the show.
Fallon took The Tonight Show on the road for the Super Bowl, broadcasting his show after the big game live from Minneapolis' Orpheum Theater. Timberlake was a guest on the show, opening the episode with a performance of his song "Supplies" and closing it with "Say Something," his collaboration with Stapleton. Readers can press play above to watch their performance, which earned big cheers from the audience.
"Say Something" appears on Timberlake's new album, Man of the Woods, released on Friday (Feb. 2). It's the only song on the album to feature Stapleton's singing -- but it's not the only track in which he had a hand. Stapleton also wrote the songs "Morning Light" (a duet with Alicia Keys) and "The Hard Stuff;" additionally, he plays guitar on the song "Filthy."
"I really just went out to Los Angeles to write songs with him," Stapleton explains. "That was one of those things where there wasn't necessarily a plan. He was like, 'Alright, you hop in there and take a verse.' I'm like, 'You want me to do what?' ... It came out great. I had a blast with him, he's a great creative force and one of those guys that if you get a chance to work with him, you should."
A Tennessee native, Timberlake has flirted with the country genre in previous years: Even before his "we're-not-worthy"-level performance with Stapleton during the 2015 CMA Awards, Timberlake had, in late 2014, invited Garth Brooks to sing "Friends in Low Places" during one of his The 20/20 Experience World Tour, teamed up with the Civil Wars' Joy Williams and hung out with Hank Williams Jr. Shortly after his CMAs moment with Stapleton, Timberlake released his song "Drink You Away" to country radio, and earned a country chart spot.
More recently, Timberlake appeared on Little Big Town's genre-bending Wanderlust album in 2016. In 2017, at September's Pilgrimage Festival -- of which Timberlake is a part-owner -- the pop star and Stapleton, along with Stapleton's wife Morgane, reunited for a performance of a few different songs during Timberlake's headlining set.
