Chris Stapleton went for an album cut for his 2019 ACM Awards performance. The country superstar shared "A Simple Song" during Sunday night's (April 7) awards show.

Stapleton opted for a no-frills stage setup with just a gigantic, moon-like spotlight, which backlit him, a drummer, upright bassist and wife Morgane Stapleton.

The sparse setup suited the song's quiet, meaningful arrangement, on which the drums were barely perceptible and Stapleton's acoustic guitar and murmuring vocals dominated the mix like a warm blanket.

Morgane, who is expecting the couple's fifth child, added equally subtle backup vocals that had the empathetic tone of '70s Emmylou Harris, and emphasized the song's sentimental vibe.

Stapleton tells the Tennessean that he wrote "A Simple Song" with his father-in-law, Darrell Hayes, in his own father's living room. Hayes was in the crowd for the big performance.

"One day, we were just talking about life and different things we've done, and all the stuff in that song," Stapleton shares of the song, from his From A Room, Vol. 2 album, "it's all true stuff for one of us so it's an interesting song that way."

The "Broken Halos" singer is up for six awards, including Entertainer of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2019 ACM Awards. His two additional nominations come as a songwriter and producer in those categories.

Stapleton typically does well at the ACMs: He won both Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year in both 2016 and 2018. In 2016, in fact, he tied the record for most ACM Awards wins in a single night.
