Brothers Osborne Don’t Want to Jinx Themselves, So They Aren’t Preparing an ACMs Acceptance Speech
The past few years have brought with them no shortage of pinch-me moments for TJ and John Osborne, the musicians who make up Brothers Osborne. Following the breakout success of their freshman project Pawn Shop, the duo has garnered critical acclaim, a generous handful of awards and nominations, and even a spot in the 2018 American Currents exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame, where the brothers once held bartending and catering jobs.
In 2018, Brothers Osborne appear on the ACM Awards nominees list in both the Video of the Year (for "It Ain't My Fault") and Vocal Duo of the Year categories. They're the reigning champs in the latter category, having won both that award and the award for New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year in 2017, but when asked at a recent press event if last year's win means they think they've got the title in the bag this year, the pair insisted that they aren't getting their hopes up.
"We're not gonna actually prepare a speech -- that would break tradition!" John Osborne responded with a laugh. "Then we definitely wouldn't win!"
"We're never a shoo-in," he goes on to say. "We never see our name on a nominations list and go, 'Oh, yeah, obviously.' We're always the underdog, and we love it that way."
TJ Osborne adds that this year's competition for Vocal Duo of the Year is especially stiff: He and his brother are going up against Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, LoCash and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
"[Tim and Faith] are a power couple," TJ Osborne says. "They're an amazing country music story. You've got two legends coming together and, so far, staying together. It's amazing."
Adds John Osborne, "Us going up again Tim or Faith alone is impossible, but when you put the two of them together, it's like, 'Come on!' They're legends."
The 2018 ACM Awards are set to take place in Las Vegas, Nev., on April 15, and air live on CBS beginning at 8PM ET. The ceremony will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
