After a winning weekend at the 2019 Grammy Awards, Brandi Carlile brought her lauded song "The Joke" to Ellen on Thursday (Feb. 14). Readers can press play above to see her performance.

For Ellen, Carlile stripped "The Joke" down to a solo, acoustic track, allowing the song's poignant, impactful lyrics to really shine. The song comes from Carlile's acclaimed 2018 album, By the Way, I Forgive You.

The spotlight has been on Carlile since Sunday night (Feb. 10), when she performed "The Joke" at the Grammys ceremony. Her performance -- a highlight of the all-genre awards show -- received a standing ovation and has had the music community buzzing.

"I was just so overwhelmed. I was so grateful," Carlile says of the response she recived. "I don't think I've ever done anything of that magnitude."

Carlile was the most-nominated woman at the 2019 Grammy Awards, followed closely by Kacey Musgraves, who took home four trophies at the end of the night, including the coveted Album of the Year (for which Carlile was also nominated) and Monáe herself, who was nominated in two categories. Carlile won three of her six categories: Best American Roots Song, Best American Roots Performance and Best Americana Album.

Throughout the night, Carlile spoke about how the Americana music community's acceptance of her and her music has touched her life.

"I feel like it's a genre that looks around and notices people that aren't being seen everywhere else, and it picks out people that it feels doesn't have a place, and it gives them a platform," she says of Americana. "The way that I've been embraced ... has been heartening to me as a gay kid from Seattle."
