The crowd watching Blake Shelton's set on Saturday night (April 23) got quite the surprise: an appearance by none other than Randy Travis.

Shelton was headlining the first day of the 2016 Off the Rails Country Music Festival in Frisco, Texas, when he brought country legend Travis to the stage. The singer had been watching Shelton's set from the side of the stage, but the The Voice coach wanted to make sure that Travis really got his due.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is Randy Travis. You tell me miracles can’t happen. You’re looking at one right here, man," Shelton told the audience as he held Travis' hand onstage. "This is one of my heroes, and he ought to be one of your heroes, man. Thank you so much for being here tonight, Randy. We all love you.”

While singing his hit "God Gave Me You," Shelton urged the crowd, "Y'all sing it for Randy, c'mon!" Chris Young, who also performed at Off the Rails on Saturday, was sure to acknowledge Travis' presence as well.

Following his Saturday night show, Shelton changed his Twitter photo to a shot of himself and Travis onstage. He also tweeted, "Thank you Texas, @ashleymonroe, @ChrisYoungMusic and the great Randy Travis for making this night so incredible."

In late March, Travis was named as one of this year's three Country Music Hall of Fame inductees. After being introduced by Brenda Lee — who choked back tears as she recalled Travis’ 2013 stroke and continuing road to recovery — Travis and wife Mary Davis both addressed the crowd assembled for the inductee announcement.

“After spending the months in the hospital when they really said there was no hope, go ahead and pull the plug, I went to his bedside, and I said, ‘Baby, you’ve gotta give me some more fight,'” Davis recalled. “And I knew that he had had a little talk with Jesus, because he squeezed my hand, and a little tear fell down, and I knew that he wasn’t through yet."

According to Davis, Travis' recovery has been a series of “giant baby steps.”

“There is nothing where you wake up one day and go, ‘Oh, I can talk,'” she explains. “It’s the little things — the extra word, the extra sound, the extra lap we make in rehab.”
