Tim McGraw is thinking about trading in his guitar for a fishing pole. The country superstar, featured on the cover of this week's special country music edition of PEOPLE magazine, says retirement may not be too far away.

"Where do I see myself in ten years?" he asked rhetorically. "Fishing. Retired, hopefully. I don't know. It's hard to say. You don't know what each day is gonna be like. So you just wake up and attack it as it comes and see what happens."

"I may still be playing and doing shows, or I may decide I don't want to do it anymore," he continues. "It just kinda goes day by day and year by year. And you kinda wake up one morning, I guess, and feel like you don't wanna do it anymore. And so far that hasn't happened."

The singer has made up his mind on one very big life change. He has given up drinking alcohol.

"There have been times when things were taken to the extreme," McGraw admits of hitting the bottle. "Plus, I got really fat!"

McGraw is now focusing on his latest project, a children's book titled 'My Little Girl,' set for release October 21.
